White Nile: sugar towns on a slow river

White Nile state is what happens when heavy industry lands in farm country. The Kenana sugar complex, launched in the 1970s, was for a time the largest integrated sugar operation anywhere, a company town of canals, mills and worker housing rising out of the plain.
Rabak, Kosti and Ed Dueim string along the river like beads, and the state's three million people cluster tightly around them.
Kosti matters for another reason: it is the river port and road junction between Khartoum and the south, which in every Sudanese crisis has made it a city of transit and refuge.
