Sennar, the old kingdom at the grid's edge

For three centuries the Funj sultans ruled from Sennar, and caravans from Ethiopia, Egypt and the Hijaz met in its markets. The kingdom faded; the geography did not.
Modern Sennar state, 2.3 million people, sits where the Blue Nile leaves the flood plain, which is why Sudan's first big dam went up at Sennar in 1925 to feed the Gezira Scheme, and why Roseires and its power lines followed upstream.
Singa is the quiet capital, Sennar town the historic one. The state is the hinge between central Sudan's farms and the southeast's hills.
