Port Sudan grew because everything else moved to it

Red Sea state used to be easy to summarise: a long coast, the country's only major port, and about 1.6 million people spread thin across 219,000 square kilometres.

Since 2023 Port Sudan has absorbed government offices, aid operations, banks and tens of thousands of displaced families. Rents tell the story better than any census. Prices for a modest flat multiplied several times over in two years.

Whether the city keeps that weight after the crisis is one of the more interesting questions in Sudanese demography. Ports that gain functions rarely give all of them back.
