How to read a live population counter

Nobody is standing in a hospital corridor clicking a tally counter every time a baby arrives. The number on our homepage is a projection: take the last solid baseline, apply the birth and death rates, and let the clock run.
That sounds like cheating until you realise every population figure works this way. Census years are rare. Everything between them is arithmetic.
The honest way to use a live counter is as a sense of scale. Sudan adds a person roughly every 25 seconds. You can feel that in a way a yearly total never conveys.
How the arithmetic actually works
Take Sudan as a worked example. Around 50 million people, a crude birth rate near 33 per 1,000 per year, a death rate near 7. Multiply out: about 1.65 million births and 360,000 deaths a year, a net gain of roughly 1.3 million people, which is 41 per second-ish territory when you divide by the 31.6 million seconds in a year. Our counter simply performs that division continuously and adds the result to the last solid baseline.
Where the counters go wrong
Three ways, mainly. First, the baseline itself can be stale; a census from 2008 projected forward for years accumulates error like a ship's dead reckoning without a star fix. Second, the rates are averages that mask change; a war, an epidemic or a sudden fertility shift bends the real curve while the counter sails straight on. Third, migration. Birth-and-death arithmetic captures natural increase only, and for countries like Lebanon, the UAE or post-2022 Ukraine, movement across borders dwarfs it.
Why we publish them anyway
Because the alternative is worse. A yearly figure published eighteen months late gives the illusion of precision without the reality of it either. A live counter at least wears its nature openly: it is a model running in front of you. Treat any digit after the fourth as decoration, use the speed of the ticking rather than the exact value, and you will read it exactly as demographers intend.
