Northern state: a million people in a landscape built for none
الولاية الشمالية: مليون إنسان في أرض صحراء
2026-07-26
Northern state covers 348,000 square kilometres, the size of Germany, and holds barely over a million people, almost all of them within sight of the Nile. Density: about three per square kilometre. Away from the river, effectively zero.
Yet this thin green ribbon posts some of Sudan's best social statistics. Literacy in the high seventies. Old traditions of schooling, and of emigration; Nubian families have sent sons to Khartoum and Cairo for generations, and their remittances built villages of surprisingly grand houses.
Empty is not the same as poor. Northern state is the proof.
