Malaria is still Sudan's most counted disease

Sudan records millions of malaria cases in a typical year, concentrated in the rainy months and the irrigated zones. It is the leading cause of clinic visits in much of the country, and among children it remains a killer.

Malaria bends demography. It clusters child deaths, drains school attendance every autumn, and cuts harvest labour exactly when farms need it.

The tools are known: nets, spraying, rapid tests, and lately seasonal chemoprevention for children. Where campaigns have held steady, hospital wards empty noticeably. Where conflict interrupts supply chains, the parasite takes the gap. It always does.
