Take the population map and trace the Nile: up the White Nile from Kosti, up the Blue Nile from Damazin, through their meeting at Khartoum, then north through Shendi, Atbara, Dongola. You have just visited most Sudanese.

The pattern is ancient. Reliable water in an arid land concentrates farming, then towns, then everything else.

There are exceptions. Kassala grew on the Gash delta, El Obeid on rain-fed gum arabic country, Nyala on Darfur's savanna. But the exceptions are oases of a different kind. The rule is the river.
