Khartoum's population is a moving target

Before the war, greater Khartoum held somewhere near nine million people, about one Sudanese in five. Then 2023 happened and the city emptied in waves. Some families went to Gezira or the north, some crossed borders, some have already come back.
Our baseline still carries the pre-war projection, and we say so openly. There is no reliable mid-war census, and pretending otherwise would be worse than admitting the gap.
What we can say: Khartoum remains the densest state by a wide margin, at roughly 400 people per square kilometre against a national average near 26.
