Kassala state packs about three million people into 37,000 square kilometres, one of the densest patches outside the capital region. The Gash river delta and the fantastical Taka mountains anchor a city that has traded across the Eritrean border for as long as there has been a border.
Beja, Beni Amer, Rashaida, Hausa and West African-descended communities layer the state's demography. Refugee camps like Shagarab have hosted Eritreans for over forty years, some families now in their third generation.
Border states never have simple statistics. People move both ways, and always have.
