Gezira: where the irrigation scheme built a state

Gezira covers under 28,000 square kilometres, a sliver next to Northern state's 348,000. Yet it holds around six million people, second only to Khartoum.
The reason is water. The Gezira Scheme, started in 1925 between the Blue and White Niles, turned the wedge of land south of Khartoum into one of the largest irrigated farms on earth. Cotton paid for it; wheat and sorghum sustain it.
Population follows canals here the way it follows coastlines elsewhere. On the density map, Gezira glows. Most of Sudan's story is in that contrast.
