Gedaref grows the sorghum that steadies the country

Gedaref's clay plains catch enough rain to farm without irrigation, and since the 1940s mechanised schemes have turned the state into Sudan's sorghum basket. Its crop exchange sets grain prices the whole country feels.
Nearly three million people live here, swelled every season by harvest workers from across Sudan and from Ethiopia next door.
The border cuts both ways. Trade flows through Gallabat in good times; refugees have crossed in bad ones, most recently tens of thousands from the Tigray war. A grain state on a border is never just a grain state.
