Put literacy on the state map and the pattern jumps out. Northern state and River Nile sit in the high seventies. Khartoum is higher still. Parts of Darfur and Blue Nile sit near 40.
The gap has old roots: river towns got schools under the Condominium decades before the west did, and every generation of educated parents makes the next one easier to teach.
Distance matters too. A child in a riverside village walks minutes to school. A child in rural Darfur may face kilometres, and for girls that distance often decides the matter. Closing a 30-point gap starts with buildings.
