Blue Nile state holds about 1.4 million people and more ethnic groups than some entire countries: Ingessana, Berta, Hausa, Funj descendants, and dozens more, layered by centuries of movement along the Ethiopian borderlands.
The Roseires dam at Ed Damazin generates a large share of Sudan's electricity, and gold digging pulls in seasonal workers whom no census ever quite catches.
The state has also seen repeated conflict since 2011, which makes its statistics among the most provisional we publish. Small states with big complexity are where national averages go to be embarrassed.
